I am sad today to announce that a 18 year old man from Taiwan has died after a 40 hour uninterrupted stint of playing Diablo 3.
The man, know only as Chuang, has been reported dead after playing the game for 40 hours without taking a single break. According to the report, he booked himself into a private room at his local internet cafe at lunchtime Friday and settled in for this two day gaming session, with no food or sleep.
Chuang was left alone in that time, as an employee of the cafe only came to check on him on the Sunday morning to find him laying on the table. The employee then woke Chuang, and he got up, took a few steps and then collapsed. He was taken to hospital but shortly died after reaching there.
Blizzard have released a statement about this death: “We’re saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don’t feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved. While we recognize that it’s ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person’s day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment.”
The cause of death has not been announced, but the authorities believe that after spending that long sitting down, he suffered cardiovascular problems or a fatal blood clot. This is a major problem in Taiwan as earlier this year, another Taiwanese person was found dead in an internet cafe after reportedly playing League of Legends for 23 hours straight.
