New Halo 4 Live-Action Trailer, Forward Unto Dawn

Come with Master Chief if you want to live in Halo 4.

I’m sure fans are a bit hesitant with the announcement of the new Halo game in the series. With Bungie signing up to work for Activision, Microsoft only has 343 Industries to work on Halo 4. So far 343 Industries made an mobile app with the Halo franchise, Halo: Waypoint; a map-pack for Halo: Reach; and another remake for the original Halo. Unfortunately there is no footage of the gameplay for Halo 4 in this live-action trailer, but we do get plenty of references from Twilight, Stormship Troopers, and even Terminator 2 in this trailer.

The live action trailer, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, features Daniel Cudmore (X-Men, The Twilight Series: Breaking Dawn) and Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia). You might only recognize Cudmore in the trailer by his voice as he is in the full-body armor of Master Chief. Beyond the name connection to the Halo franchise, the trailer starts at a boot-camp for soldiers. One of the soldiers there, who I presume is the protagonist named Thomas, is not fitting in so well and decides to leave. But just before he leaves, some kind of catastrophe strikes the base and Master Chief comes in, nearly mistaking Thomas and his girlfriend for Sarah and John Conner.

I’m somewhat confused on what purpose this trailer for Halo 4 is meant for. The trailer is shot well with some good looking sets and decent costumes. There are also great moments where the trailer shows the soldier Thomas not fitting in well with this boot camp instead of telling us. But I think this trailer would suit better for a Halo movie, not a Halo game. The context of the trailer seems like it could make a good summer film, and it seems to be taking a different direction than how the original Halo 3 ended. Yet this doesn’t seem to be connected to the story meant for Halo 4, so I think most of the characters and context in this trailer are pointless.

Halo 4 is available for pre-order in three editions. Hop into Master Chief’s armor again this early November, 2012.
