As the latest edition to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series named Gates of Infinity nears its US release this weekend and the game itself still isn’t due out in Europe till May 17th. Odd since it was originally released in Japan in November of last year.
The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series can be at best described as a rouge-like series due to the randomly generated dungeons layouts and instead of playing as a human, the series instead focuses on the player playing as Pokémon instead.
The latest trailer demonstrates the games Augmented Reality function where players can scan there environments to find unique dungeons by using the “Discover a Magnagate” function. Judging from the trailer itself when you discover a Magnagate a Pokémon will appear and you’ll enter that dungeon with it although it’s too early to tell. Using the “Discover a Magnagate” function will definitely add a lot of replay value to the game with the prospect of finding a hidden dungeon in your morning coffee for instance.
Along with the “Discover a Magnagate” function Nintendo has confirmed that Gates of Infinity will also be getting DLC. The DLC will range from new dungeons, items and more Pokémon to interact with. A DLC dungeon called the Poke Forest Mystery Dungeon will be free for players to download on launch day till April 30th. Nintendo has also commented that additional DLC will “launch regularly throughout April”
So Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates of Infinity is set up to be the biggest entry in this series to date with the guarantee of DLC coming for the game as well as the “Discover the Magnagate” adding to the replayability as long as you don’t mind the fact that it looks like there have been no changes to the gameplay mechanics.
