Nintendo have announced that its inaugural Gala Screening at the 56th BFI London Film Festival will be the UK premiere of the feel good comedy ‘The Sapphires’ about a larger than life soul band and starring Chris O’Dowd. The BFI London Film Festival will take place from the 10th – 21st of October 2012.
Nintendo and the British Film Institute have also launched a new nation-wide competition to find and encourage new British film talent. The ‘Vision in 3D’ invites emerging filmmakers to submitted a short 3D film using a range of techniques and modes on the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL.
The competition winner will have the opportunity to be mentored by director Asif Kapadia and AV innovator Stuart Warren Hill. They will also have the chance to shoot a short film in London in collaboration with their mentors and a professional crew.
Three runners-up in the competition will each receive a pair of tickets to the BFI London Film Festival . they will also receive a British Film Institute membership for one year if they are over 18. If they are under eighteen they will receive a one-year subscription to Sight and Sound Magazine.
The competition is supported by director Ridley Scott. The Vision in 3D competition focuses on the theme of British Summer 2012. The winning short film will be premiered before Nintendo's gala screening of 'The Sapphires' at the BFI London Film Festival.
Award-winning director, Ridley Scott spoke about the competition stating:
“Digital and 3D filmmaking is within the grasp of everyone these days. I’m excited by all the skill and talent that’s emerging in the UK, telling stories in different ways and it’s vital that it gets our support.” … “This competition launched by the BFI and Nintendo opens up a big opportunity for emerging filmmakers to make their mark and they should grab it with both hands. I can’t wait to see the results.”
In addition to this competition and as part of their wider cultural partnership, Nintendo and the BFI have announced that they are working together on a number of exciting new 3D content projects.
