Ouya Raises Over $2.3 million in a Day

With $2.3 million gathered in less than 24 hours on Kickstarter, it’s safe to say that people are generally excited for the Ouya Android gaming console. Almost 19,000 people are currently supporting the new system, and with more than three weeks left on the clock, it’s predicted to be a worth competitor against the Pebble smart-watch, which generated a little over $10 million on Kickstarter earlier this year.

To give an idea of how much hype surrounds the Ouya, consumers have already bought out most of the rewards that were offered. Pledges of $225 and more were given to reserve a console and two controllers with the user’s name engraved in them. Some consumers even pledged around $700 for the “Developer Special”, which offers a rooted model of the console, access to SDK (software development kit) before anyone else, and a year’s worth of promoting for their game.

So many people are waiting in anticipation for the Ouya’s release, evident in their pledges. As a result, some might be wondering what this new console has to offer. There has to be a reason why people would donate a total of $2.3 million in less than a day, right? Well, the main reason developers are jumping and kicking their heels together for the Ouya is because it supposedly has an easy-to-hack interface. Held together by nothing more than a few standard screws and containing a USB port, it’s looking promising in that aspect. The ability to run apps such as Netflix has also been presented. At $100 a system, the console offers affordability as well.

Hopefully, Ouya will be able to live up to the expectations of its 19,000 supporters. Will it be able to deliver an innovative gaming experience to its consumers come 2013? Only time will tell the answer to that question.
