Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) presented a brand new PlanetSide 2 cinematic trailer during Asia’s most popular gaming expo ChinaJoy 2012. The trailer also premiered worldwide online at the same time. According to John Smedley, the President of Sony Online Entertainment, the CGI trailer, produced by Blur Studio, “brilliantly captures the intense action and massive depth of gameplay in PlanetSide 2.”
And boy does it. The trailer starts off in the middle of a massive battle. The sky is full of ships. Soldiers are getting shot down left and right. While our hero fires down one enemy, another one jumps ambushes him from a nearby cliff, trying to take him out with what appears to be a knife or some other sharp melee weapon. Fortunately, our hero manages to shoot down the enemy before he could do any real damage. Blood spurts from the bullet wound he inflicted on his assailant, and covers his visor with the crimson liquid.
After wiping the blood clean from his visor, our hero looks around to see his allies taking cover behind rocks and follows suit, cocking his gun in preparation for a daring charge. The scene cuts off to an entire line of soldiers charging into the fray, leaping from a cliff down towards the raging war below. Our hero charges into battle, firing his gun into the chaotic warzone. He avoids enemy gunfire, jumps onto a tank and throws a grenade down its hatch, jumps off the tank, and grabs onto a helicopter that was speeding by. After letting go of the helicopter, our hero uses his jetpack to shoot into the air, leaping from air carrier to air carrier until he reaches one full of enemy reinforcements. He runs along the top of the ships, spraying bullets into the hull of the aircraft (killing some soldiers in the process) and finishes off by shooting the cockpit of the airship.
An enemy leaps from one of the ships, tackling our hero midflight onto a nearby airship. While the two duke it out on the giant aircraft, another airships crashes into it, sending it plummeting to the ground below. Before impact, our hero manages to jump off and use what little energy he had left in his jetpack to soften his landing. With the area seemingly clear, our hero completes his mission and places some sort of device on the ground to signal for reinforcements (or claim the area. I’m not too sure). Unfortunately, he is stabbed and killed by one of three enemies that were cloaked in the area.
The three and a half minute trailer is astonishing and packs a lot of action in a short frame of time. If my little description didn’t convince you, you should probably watch it and witness it for yourself.
