Coming towards the end of this summer is the action RPG, shooter Borderlands 2; complete with egotistical dictators and a vault-hunters with a fetish for guns. What most people don’t know is the original Borderlands was not the first game in the franchise, but a reboot of the original game from the 1980s back when floppy disks were still the main storage devices. The over six megabyte (or five floppy disks for you ancient nerds) might not have a co-op mode or a variety of guns, but The Border Lands trademark could be seen to this day in its sequels.
All joking aside, The Border Lands is meant to be a game to excite you for Borderlands 2 coming out later this year. Honestly? It works pretty well in capturing that retro game experience along with keeping to the theme of Borderlands. The Border Lands has four playable characters based upon the roster from Borderlands 2. Each of them has their own statistics determining how much HP, speed and damage they deliver. You should encounter a familiar set of monsters, along with some guns to keep the game varied. That shotgun might be slow to reload, but it could have a random-spread attribute which shoots the bullets in random directions. Or maybe that pistol will deliver great damage, but can only have one bullet in the chamber.
The Border Lands is a nice way of advertising Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 2 game. Ralph, winner of the BAFTA creative agency developed The Border Lands in the style of 1980s gameplay. It might not capture the exploration and vast world like Borderlands, but The Border Lands does have a feel like Gauntlet. Plus you can play it online for free and boast about how awesome you are by sharing your score on Facebook.
