Rayman Legends for Wii U outsells all other formats

The Wii U version of the latest game in the Rayman series, Rayman Legends, has sold more copies than the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of the game in its first week of sales.

Sales monitor ChartTrack has revealed that Wii U versions of the game accounted for nearly half of the UK sales of the game, with 45% of sales. The Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions lagged behind with 35%, 24% and 1% respectively. This data does only cover physical sales of the game, meaning that the PC figure may not actually be quite as low if digital downloads were to be taken in to consideration.

Rayman Legends Wii U Ocean

The Wii U version was originally slated for release alongside the console late last year.

Rayman Legends had previously been intended as a Wii U launch day exclusive, before its release was put back to March 1 2013. This game again failed to appear on this date, with Ubisoft delaying the release until late Summer to give the company time to adapt it for multi-format release. Many Wii U fans weren’t fond of Ubisoft’s decision to delay the release, but the impressive sales figures for the console will surely fill some of them with a sense of satisfaction.

This news is especially positive for Nintendo given the overall failure of the Wii U to muster any massive amount of sales. Poor sales recently led retailer Asda to stop stocking the console in its UK stores, though recent strong sales by games like Pikmin 3 have done some good in reversing the console’s fortunes.

The game has received wide critical-acclaim, with the Wii U version of the game currently holding a 91 out of 100 score on Metacritic.com. Despite this, and the success of the Wii U version of the game in comparison to other formats, the overall sales weren’t enough to break in to the top five for this week, with Saints Row IV, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and Disney Infinity among those above Rayman Legends in the charts.

Rayman Legends is available now for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U, and will be available on PS Vita from 12th September.
