Rumours suggest that Google may soon reveal it’s own smartwatch

The search engine giant may soon jump into the smartwatch market

Recently an anonymous source told the blog 9to5Google that Google are set to announce their latest project, a smartwatch named Nexus that will use Google Now and will work in conjunction with your Android devices.

On Google Plus Artem Russakovskii announced a rumour that states that Google are set to announce a Nexus watch which they’ve codenamed Gem on the 31st of October although he also stated that the date for it was a month old.

Google Now is the name given to Google’s current innovation where instead of you typing what you want to search for, you instead ask the computer like you’d ask a person and you get answers about your query back. It will also redirect your e-mails, appointments, directions and more onto your smartwatch as well.

Currently Google Now’s main interface are “cards” which are virtual boxes that each contain select information like on containing traffic so when you ask a question related to that subject, Google Now opens that card and gives you an audio response to your question.

Now Google aren’t the first company to jump into the smartwatch market and they’re going to have to deal with the same problems that other companies have had to face.

For starters the Google Smartwatch works in conjunction with Android phones meaning that to use it to its fullest you’re going to need to keep jumping between them. Along with this people who own a smartwatch are fairly low in general and even then 40% of them stopped using their smartwatches because they either forgot about them or got bored with them.

Finally the last problem with smartwatches was brought up by the CEO of Sony Kazuo Hirai is that smartwatches are also limited by how a watch someone is willing to wear.

Rumours suggest that Google are trying to combat common complaints with smartwatches by equipping the watches with a longer battery life and Bluetooth 4.0 support. Since Google are trying to increase to watches battery life I have to wonder if there doing so by limited the technology on the watch like say not including a camera.

With all of these problems associated with smartwatches some people may wonder why Google would want to jump into this market but if Google does jump in, will they be able to beat the competition and create a smartwatch that can beat out of these restrictions.
