Activision Publishing today unveiled Skylanders SWAP Force, the latest game in the popular Skylander series. The newest installment in the popular series that has endeavored to bring toys to digital life will be featured at Toy Fair 2013, which will run from February 10-13 at the Javitis Centre in New York.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, players must embark on a quest to the Cloudbreak Isles, the resting place of a mystical volcano that erupts every one hundred years to replenish the magic of the Skylands. While fighting in epic battle, a group of Skylanders are caught in the eruption, blasting them to earth. However, the eruption also imbues them with new powers, allowing them to use the titular swap ability.
The swap mechanic is a feature new to SWAP Force, allowing players to mix and match the top and bottom halves of the new Skylander toys and then have these changes recognised in the video game. This allows for individual control of the abilities of each Skylander. After assembling their unique SWAP Force, players must set out to thwart the plans of the returning villain Kaos.
Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing feels that Skylanders has a history as the creator of an “entirely new category that brings the world of physical toys and video games together like never before”. With this new mechanic on the way, he is hopeful Skylanders SWAP Force will “push the genre forward with another big innovation; customisation”.
16 Skylander SWAP characters will be available to players, allowing for up to 250 unique combinations. The game will also feature 32 core Skylander characters, 16 of which are reiterations of fan favourites and 16 completely that are completely new.
In addition, players can scan in eight new LightCore characters. All these characters will be viewable in the rich environments of Skylanders SWAP Force, brought to life by the high resolution graphics offered by the game.
