Star Wars : The Old Republic Goes Free-To-Play

Bioware Austin, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed Star wars: The Old Republic MMO have announced today that the game will be receiving a free-to-play option this fall. This addition will give eager players access to all eight of the characters story lines with certain restrictions, up to a level cap of 50. Full access to the game, like higher levels and downloadable content are still available through micro-transactions or the usual subscription option.

In a recent press release, GM of Bioware Austin Matthew Bromberg stated “Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old RepublicTM universe.” The executive producer Jeff Hickman also added “Since launch, we’ve been listening to feedback from our fans and adding new content and refining The Old Republic at a breakneck pace. We believe we are in a position to help improve the service even more, not only by continuing to add new content, but also by expanding the game to many more Star Wars fans, increasing the populations on worlds and the vibrancy of the community.”

In the coming fall, two paths to play Star Wars: The Old Republic will be laid before at your feet:

Subscription – This is the typical model for any players wanting complete access to the game, including all player levels and current game content. Subscription users will now also have additional monthly grants of Cartel coins, which is the new virtual currency to be released later this fall. These coins can be used to buy all sorts of in game items like customizable equipment and convenience features that are said to enhance the overall game play experience.

Free-To-Play – Players can now enjoy the game up until level 50, though restrictions will be placed on new content and advanced player features. Some of which can still be “unlocked” with Cartel Coins.

To wrap everything up, Star Wars: The Old Republic will on sale this August for $14.99 USD, which comes with one month of free subscription service. Current players will be awarded with additional benefits in celebration of this program. Bioware has said they will be putting out updates at a faster pace, the first off which is on course for August. Current and even former players who re-enlist will be recieving Cartel Coin bonuses while also qualifying for new in-game items.
