In the Final Hours of Tomb Raider: The End of the Beginning Part 1 of the Crystal Dynamics video web series, we followed the team to understand that had a lot of bugs and finishing touches to make before shipping to game and we were left in suspense whether the team could manage to complete Tomb Raider on time. We will find that out right here in Part 2!

We are joined once again by host Zachary Levi as he states Tomb Raider has only days remaining until they need to submit the code for certification on whether the game will be given the green light to get shipped to stores, hopefully they will succeed!

Final Hours of Tomb Raider

Zachery Hosts for the final hour

We are first greeted by Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio for Crystal Dynamics. He explains they’ve been around for 20 years, and how they’ve had tough moments between the beginnings to now, barely surviving at times and through the ups and downs with each game.

Darrell also mentions with only days remaining, bugs are still being fixed, with QA still playing testing the game. At the same time Eidos Montreal are doing the same thing with the multi player aspect, fixing last minute issues with both teams submitting their final product together hopefully complete.

Next we are sitting with Karl Stewart, Global Brand Director for Crystal Dynamics. He laughs at the fact they have to submit the final product in 4 days time, and little sleep will happen during those days.

Karl introduces Brian Horton, who is a Senior Art Director that has been working in branding the game; posters, magazine covers, screenshots – It’s all about selling it and making it cool, getting the hype to the world before the game comes out.

Back to Karl, he reiterates with Zac on how he has been following the Crystal Dynamics team for the last six months, showcasing everything on Tomb Raider from the music, the voice acting and more.

The Creative Director, Noah Hughes explains how strange he will be once the game is finally shipped since the entire team have been tirelessly working on Tomb Raider everyday for four years.

Darrell says the company quote they’ve lived by during the entire project is “A Survivor is Born” – meaning they’ve gone through rough moments but have come out on top delivering their best game yet.

Karl goes on to say they wanted not only to deliver a top tier visual masterpiece, but to connect to people on a deep level on the story, to get the player immersed into the Lara Croft character once again. The hope is for gamers to remember the experience in years to come.

Lastly in closing, they all mention how it’s been a passionate life journey from beginning to end, pouring their blood, sweat and tears on making Tomb Raider. They’ve put their best into the game and have learned a lot during the whole development – they plan to continually evolve in deep connected stories for their future games.

I've been a gamer since the NES days where I still love my retro games today. I'm an all-rounder when it comes to genre but my favorite types are story-driven games. I'm pretty competitive when it comes to playing online so be sure to bring it!
