Foul Play is coming to Xbox Live Arcade to bring together the Victorian era, demon hunting, and side-scrolling brawler gameplay. Sounds like a pretty good mix, right? If you had to be a demon, I bet it would be better to live in the Victorian era than in any other time. Back then they could wear top hats and carry canes. But imagine having demon-duty in the 1980’s; it was probably nothing but spandex and Rick Astley before he was a meme. Now that’s hell. The Victorian era had trains, monocles, interesting mustaches, and if that doesn’t woo you then think about this: it was a time without Justin Bieber. Now you’re sold. It wouldn’t have been great for me because of the whole not letting women vote or have property or choose who they marry thing, but it was probably great for man people.
Foul Play will put players in the shoes of demon-hunter Baron Dashforth. He can’t just kill the demons and move forward in the typical brawler fashion though. He has to entertain a live audience with his derring-do since the stage for this game is an actual stage. I’m excited for the chance to beat down a demon and then turn to the audience and bellow, “Are you not entertained, my good sirs? Carry on then!” Creative Producer, Jeff Tanton, describes the game as “…this incredible fusion of arcade brawler, crowd‐pleasing mechanics, over‐the‐top characters, and unique setting that’ll make Foul Play so much fun – working on the Xbox LIVE Arcade platform for the first time is very exciting, we’re getting to throw a whole bunch of awesome stuff into the mix that just wouldn’t have been possible before!”
In addition to the crowd-pleasing mechanic, Foul Play will also give players a co-op mode with special team takedowns. Also, the name of the co-op character is Scampwick, which is just marvelous. I’m going to demand to play as Scampwick every time.
