The indie MMORPG Project: Gorgon may not be coming to a PC or Mac near you; that is, unless you’re willing to help. Project: Gorgon, from Narwhal Games, takes the best concepts from new and old MMOs and mixes in plenty of original ideas never before seen in any MMO. The game has a robust combat system and is designed for players who love to explore a deep world with complex game mechanics. Narwhal games describes Project: Gorgon as a cross between Asheron’s Call, Everquest, and Nethack, which sounds promising.
Project: Gorgon takes a cue from these older MMOs and doesn’t hold your hand as much. Instead, players are encouraged to explore and interact with the environment. Narwhal Games has also listed some cool features which include:
● Words of power
● Combat combos that change daily
● Programmable battle golems
● Player-created treasure hunts
● Player werewolves subject to the real-life lunar cycle
● NPCs with fun interactions
● Permanent curses as death penalties
That's just a sampling. Narwhal promises tons of new innovative ideas and mechanics that will help make its MMORPG less stale, less repetitive, and more immersive than its counterparts. Check out some of these mechanics in the developer diary below.
Project: Gorgon has already been in development for over three years. The team at Narwhal games has done much of the heavy lifting and is ready to enter alpha testing. Unfortunately, the team has had to take a lot of contract work in order to stay afloat in this difficult economy and has only been able to work on Project: Gorgon part-time. Here’s where you can help. Narwhal Games has set up a Kickstarter Campaign to raise money for Project: Gordon. The money will allow the team to refocus their efforts on the game, contract out art and audio services, and meet their launch date next year.
If you want to see Project: Gorgon become a reality head on over to their Kickstarter page to donate. You can also follow Project: Gorgon on Twitter and Facebook or visit there webpage here.
*Writers Opinion*
I am very happy with how gamers are treating the indie community. Steam has just added Greenlight, and Kickstarter has made several dreams a reality. So support indie developers if you’re sick of having the same FPS recycled over and over again. Support indie developers if you want larger corporations to stop cloning one another and start developing new innovative concepts. If larger corporations take notice of our interest in indie developers it’s better for all gamers, as long as they maintain the mindset to always be innovative, never repetitive.
