iPhone 5S the ‘world’s first’ 64-bit smartphone, both available September 20
Apple has recently unveiled their brand new iPhone 5S and its entry-level companion, the iPhone 5C: Both of these devices will be available on stores shelves on September 20th.
The iPhone 5s will come in Silver, black and gold variants, machined out of high-grade aluminium.
Inside, the phone will be using a new 64-bit A7 processor, which Apple Boss Tim Cook described as “a huge leap forward”, noting that the graphics and CPU speeds are “twice as fast”. According to Apple’s official PR, this will be “the world’s first smartphone with 64-bit-desktop-class architecture.”
The iPhone 5S will also use a second chip called the M7 – a ‘motion co-processor’ that will track motion data via an accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. Apple said that the new M7 chip will, “enable a new generation of health and fitness apps”, which will plug in via a new CoreMotion API.
The fingerprint-reading tech will be used to replace the current passcode-protected lock screen, but it can also be used to authorize purchases on Itunes.
Apple has also added a new 8-megapixel camera on the 5S which will pack new stabilization features to sharpen objects or people in motion, and a new ‘True Tone’ flash will help pictures retain more true-to-life colors. A new Burst Mode will take a rapid succession of pictures to capture action shots. The camera will also be capable of recording video at 120fps for smooth slow-motion playback.
As for battery life, the firm claims 10 hours of 3G talk time, around 250 hours of standby life, 10 hours of LTE web browsing, and 40 hours of music playback.
The iPhone 5S will be offered in three versions: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399, all with a two-year contract. Cases will be offered at $39 each.
Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller, said
“iPhone 5s is the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, delivering desktop class architecture in the palm of your hand.”
Apple has also confirmed a new entry level iPhone called the iPhone 5C.
The device will come in two SKUs, 16 and 32GB versions, costing $99 and $199 respectively with a two-year contract.
The device will be powered by an A6 CPU core (as in the current iPhone 5), throwing pixels onto a 4-inch retina display.
The new colorful hard-coated poly-carbonate casing will house an 8MP camera with 3x video zoom, LTE network chips – with up to 100Mbps download speeds – and 2.4/5GHz WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0.
Blue, yellow, red, green and white were among the bright and vibrant colors shown at the presentation.New cases for the iPhone 5c will will cost $29 each.
Pre-orders on the 5C will begin September 13. No information was given on pre orders for the iPhone 5s.
