Path of Exile Open Beta Starts This Weekend

More loot, skills, and monsters await you in the dark action RPG Path of Exile.

With crowd-funding becoming a popular trend for game developers, it wouldn't be surprising to see more games go for this route when they might not be accepted by publishers.  Old RPG franchises like Shadowrun Online are advertised through Kickstarter as a way to bring out games developers to make a game they love, and gamers can share their appreciation for a project with their wallet.  Another good example of crowd-funding in the works would be Grinding Gear Games Path of Exile, an action RPG for the PC.

We should all know by now that point and click action RPGs on the PC are nothing new.  There are some action RPGs that will get a release on consoles before PC, and there is already a decent library of games available in this genre.  However Path of Exile still got over 1.2 million USD dollars from their Kickstarter-like campaign from fans purchasing a variety of in-game items for their avatar.  Grinding Gear Games just announced that this weekend the game will have temporary open Beta access, starting from 5 PM PDT on September 14th.  Then the open Beta for Path of Exile will end at 11:59 PM PDT on September 16th.

A new patch will be included in Path of Exile as well, adding a variety of new content.  The latest patch will add new skill gems like Arctic Breath and Ghost Reaver.  New quests, improved minion functionality and a new look for item hovers are included as well.  Unique items created by Brother Laz, author of the popular Diablo II mod Median XL will be available, along with any unique items made by fans who purchased the "Diamond Supporter" pack.
