Sony has announced when gamers can expect to see the new smaller and lighter version of the PlayStation 3 on UK shelves. Featuring a new design, consumers will have a choice of two models of the new Super Slim console, a hefty 500GB HDD model and one that features 12GB Flash Memory, with the 500GB version launching on September 28th followed by the 12GB on October 12th.
In relation to previous versions of the console the new model will be 20% smaller and 25% lighter than the current slim version, making it over half the volume and weight of the original 60GB launch model. Visually it follows the trend set by its predecessors with its sleek and simple design.
During their announcement Sony took the opportunity to emphasise how the extra HDD space can improve all aspects of the PlayStation 3 experience, while highlighting the obvious financial benefits of the 12GB version as well as addressing concerns about its limited storage capacity.
“With the extra HDD capacity which has been extended from 320GB and 160GB, users can store and enjoy more and more entertainment content including games, music, photos, and video on the new PS3. In addition, the new PS3 with 12GB flash memory offers opportunities to experience the world of PlayStation® at an affordable price point. Users can also expand the storage capacity of the new PS3 with 12GB flash memory by connecting a dedicated HDD (250GB) to be released concurrently with the new PS3”.
Despite the system being in its 7th year Sony showed no sign of letting up on support for the PlayStation 3 with promises of “releasing a vast library of exciting and attractive software titles and offering users a choice from a variety of hardware models.”

*Writer's Thoughts*
I think it’s a smart move by Sony to introduce a model with less memory and therefore a lower price point to entice less dedicated and younger gamers to adopt the PS3, especially as it nears the end of its lifecycle. However I think it’s a bit late in the day to be offering a 500GB HDD with next gen just around the corner and with no new features besides a smaller, lighter console Sony hasn’t really provided the incentive for anyone who already owns a PlayStation 3 to adopt this model.
That’s just my opinion but what do you guys think, anyone planning on purchasing the new model when it’s released? If so which version are you likely to choose?
