Game Dev Tycoon is very enjoyable, it's simple, addictive and fun. I would recommend this game to anyone that is interested in gaming or just enjoys tycoon games overall. I can't wait to see what the developers have in store for this game.
In Game Dev Tycoon you set up your own game company and start creating games to make the most money and become the most popular company among your competitors.
Story – I wouldn’t say there is a story that the game explicitly gives you, however you could say that you’re developing your own story as you experience the up and downs of your gaming company which has started from your garage to your big office. But the main goal in this game is to succeed as a game company and earn a good reputation and enough money to pay your employees and fund your games by the time 35 years have past. You’ll then earn your score and choose to continue playing with no new advances in research or platforms.

Presentation – Overall everything about the presentation is beyond my expectations, the music, the layout, the graphics work extremely well with the style of the game. Unfortunately there isn’t much to say about it because it’s very simple. My only issue is that when I tried to click on the box which enabled me to name my game would click through and open the menu, or I would have to click on some options twice as it would click through. When using Steam and clicking SHIFT+TAB to talk to your friends would sometimes freeze up. However I suspect that these problems will be ironed out by the time this game is released. They were minuscule issues and I easily forgave them because of how much I enjoyed this game.
Gameplay – The gameplay is simple, but addictive and fun, I was playing for hours before I realised. I love how the game progresses through the time of game development from the NES to the Playstation 4 and further. You even get to experience the highs and lows of many consoles such as the cancellation of the Dreamcast and the rising success of the PC.

The amount of choice you have when developing your game is immense, there is so much choice I never ran out of combinations when choosing from the topic and genre. You can even choose what audience it’s targeted at which I think is a really interesting idea. You then choose your list of engines which you have developed over the years, at the start you aren’t able to create one or even use one. Once you’ve done that you have these three meters, which you can change, and the higher the bar the more time will be focused into that concept such as graphics or story. These all cater to certain topics and genres, so having good dialogue in your RPG will be noticed by the reviewers once your game has been released, your game will be rated from one to ten with a little comment which is sometimes nice, witty or just mean. But I always look forward to seeing them because I’m surprised with all the different comments they say, I would hardly see a repeated comment.
The most important aspect of the gameplay is that there isn’t hardly any down time, I rarely found myself sat there and thought that there’s nothing else I can do for now. You always have something to do, it might be some research or trying to create that perfect game which can produce you millions. Another thing which I found pretty entertaining was the random events that would occur, for example I was told to sue someone for creating a fan game, or let them be. I let them be and I gained considerable amount of fans. Fans are important to your success, to get them you need to create good games or pay for a good booth at G3, and the more you have the more money you’ll earn. So don’t neglect them. But not every event is positive, I found this out the hard way as I was scammed by someone which somewhat gave me trust issues for the rest of my playthough.
The game is so easy to get into and the tutorial explains everything well, I never found myself stuck or confused about a certain function which I didn’t know how to use. I have so much to say about the gameplay but I’m afraid it’ll take forever.
Lifespan – This game took me 7 hours to complete on the normal length, however I have no intention on leaving it there. I plan on playing this game on a longer length and see how that goes. Additionally the developers seem to have more in store for this game so I cannot wait to see what comes in the future. So if you have the £7.99 to buy this game I definitely would.
