I think this is a great game for any fan of story and Sci-Fi i really think that Mass Effect series is what we should compare other game series to I think if they get better combat it would deserve a ten out of ten. As it stands it gets a fantastic score.
Mass Effect is the first in a three part series and it is an amazing game especially the story which is the best story of any game in my opinion. The game lasts around (if you do all the side quests like me) forty hours for me. The gameplay is the weakest part of the game it is cover shooter and if you play as a soldier it isn’t fun I played as an engineer who has ranged attacks like fire. Engineer and the biotics are the best choices to have a fun time. In my opinion you should stop reading this and play instead.
I touched on it lightly in the Introduction and my opinions are weren’t the most charitable but it’s not that I don’t like it is more that it is overshadowed by the story which is neatly made that the combat by comparison is meh. It is a cover shooter and you get different weapons biotics/engineers are lifts, slams, fire, cold etc. There are also firearms pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. There are also grenades, along with a variety of weapon and armour upgrades.
There is also an interesting bit of gameplay where you drive the Makyo (the Normandy’s car kind of) the Makyo controls like a hippo in a wheelbarrow but it is fun. It adds a sense of scale to the game a sense that each planet is massive and explorable. The future games got rid of it which is lazy but understandable. A lot of people complained about the Makyo which I don’t get sure it hard to control but it was still fun I would rather they tighten the controls then just get rid of it.
If you buy the xbox special or PS3 you get all the DLC Pinnacle Station and Bring Down the Sky. They don’t mix up the game that much it is still the same game it doesn’t mess with the formula.
Mass Effect is a pretty game at least for its time it looks okay. The animations are slick and the character models are great. I also like the diversity between the aliens from the blue Assari to the fat short Volus people in suits there is plenty of diversity.
The sounds need a special mention using a sniper sounds great (I didn’t use snipers the engineer that I am) but what deserves special mention is the great voice acting. Here is a list of my favourite Brandon Keener who played Garrus (o Garrus), Jenifer Hale who played Fem Shep (I played male unfortunately) Seth Green played Joker (not the Batman one) and Ali Hillis played Liara ( guys her or Ashley). I was going to do a joke where I list all of them but I decided not to for the sake of not looking like I can’t be bothered to write. All the actors apart from one or two is good is what I am saying.
The music is great I would love to buy the games soundtrack. It sets up a great sense of amazing galactic scale. It adds a great sense of importance to the universe. I love the composers Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, Richard Jacques and David Kates well done guys.
The game can list up to forty hours and there is plenty to do side quests, the main story and just go around random planets. There are also achievements which are fun enough I also think the fact if you play this game you can
transfer this character to the next game. Making a lot of time to spend being Commander Shepherd.
There is so many side things to do out of games such as comics ( I like them people I know don’t), books ( not as good), iPod games ( meh) and an app (not really that good).
Overall the lifetime is very good.
I would like to take time to say that the story is the best part of this game if you love story driven games this is the game for you it is fantastic. It is one of the main reasons I play this game it is brilliant. It is so fantastic I love the story without giving too much away the story is about a sentient robotic species called the reapers and I feel bad for saying that to people who haven’t played it. It is just that good.
Closing Thoughts and Conclusion
The only reason people talk about or review old games is either to praise and talk about the terrific parts with nostalgic glasses over so that the review is nothing but positive apart from possible one or two complaints. Or they might review or talk about it so that they can slate it before it is laid down to rest before someone else insults it and yells about its terrible gameplay, story, presentation and everything else. Luckily it is for the first reason I love the Mass Effect series and Mass Effect is in my top ten of all time. I am terrified by the fact that Bioware is so good at making stories considering how other games fail terribly.
