Planetside 2 is a free to play shooter MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first person shooter) on Steam. The game boasts persistent battles that can last days and sometimes weeks – they can last a very, very, very long time from the first shot to the last casualty. “Building off of the ground breaking original, PlanetSide 2 is a free-to-play, massively multiplayer online first person shooter (MMOFPS) that delivers truly epic, massive combat on a scale never before seen in stunning, breathtaking detail.” They say this on Steam and it is true as I said earlier the battles can take days or weeks and it does look very good.
Instead of the usual way reviews are done, instead I am going to write what happened from me spawning into the world and after that – cover the individual sections.
As I started I joined the New Conglomerate instantly, as they stand for freedom and stuff like that. When I spawned I was surrounded by about a hundred and fifty people and they were all charging some building trying to take it from the Terran Republic I think. I instantly took out my rifle (NC1 Gauss Rifle, I think it was the basic gun) and entered the fray. I noticed that it was going horribly wrong, so I jumped onto a quad bike and drove like a mad man to the South.
Having just deserted a big battle which was probably still being fought as I heard the explosions, gun shots and people trying to organise the last of the attackers into some form of formation. I had time to enjoy the scenery and I can tell you it looks terrific. I got so distracted by the scenery that I accidentally drove into a cliff face.
I was walking along by myself, enjoying the scenery, when I saw a large amount of Terran Republic soldiers – after a moment of wondering where the other faction came into the game I realised I should hide. I jumped into a nearby rock and waited for them to pass, which would give me a chance to leg it. Unfortunately either this was a big coincidence or the other players thought I had started a massive battle against the oppressors and my faction came in force.
I decided not to be a coward this time and I charged forward gun in hand and happy that they still haven’t seen me so I can still run away if I have to. The Terrarns where facing the west and the Conglomerate where facing the East so they were going head on. I however was facing North so I would hit their side. I reached the battle ground after the battle had started I fired upon some of the side people who had not seen me, so I killed two guys easily. Happy about my kills I veered to the left and met up with the rest of the Conglomerate.
After ten minutes of hard fighting against the oppressors I realised for one how good the big battles are and how fluky I am, since I have been playing for around thirty minutes and haven’t died once. The battle was going our way and the enemy was being routed and they were retreating like cowards (yeah I am a hypocrite). I thought “yeah we win, freedom for the win” in my Scottish head I thought I was like William Wallace in Bravehart shouting “FREEDOM!”
The leftovers from the battle started running away, so we made chase. As it turns out they weren’t retreating, instead they were regrouping and something that resembles that scene in Star Wars where all the ships are preparing to destroy the Death Star. Around ten to twenty jets, which I later learnt where mosquitoes, came and started ripping our guys apart. The enemy started coming towards us firing on the ground as well. As I was preparing for my first death and thinking may as well take some with me, I started shooting and killed around four or five. Then I noticed a few of the jets turned my way – I sprinted like a bunny on fire being chased by a hunter. Just as I thought I was about to die; a group of heavy assaults came over and obliterated the enemies air troops. As we finished off the enemies I decided that it was a job well done and left.
SOE CEO John Smedley said the cash shop “will not sell a more powerful gun or vehicle.” I disagree I think you can buy power not that much power but still some power. I think it is slightly above average.
The gameplay is your standard FPS (first person shooter) guns make bullets fly towards baddies and baddies fall over. There is also driving and flying and they are fun and responsive. I think the gameplay if fun enough to keep you entertained for a while.
The game, if you play by yourself, will last a while but if you can play with friends than it will last ages!
As I said earlier it looks amazing and is a very pretty game especially when you consider that it is a MMO.
