Why is Battlefield so underrated?

The battlefield series started way back in 2002 with Battlefield 1942, which was released for the PC and then 2 years later for the Mac.

Game-play from Battlefield 1942

For a series that has had so many additions, I still find that people steer more towards other First-Person shooter series‘, for example Call of Duty. But I cannot understand why. This is a series that, in my opinion has always offered more for a lot less, but still struggles to keep up with the other games it competes against.

The main thing that the series has over others is the ability to use the vehicles featured on the maps. This brings a whole new level of excitement to each and every session on any of the games. All the vehicles depicted are based on real life vehicles used by militaries from all around the globe. Another main feature is the ability to choose a different class before and during gameplay. These classes aren’t the same in every game, but generally are similar, albeit with different names. The main four classes are assault, engineer, support and recon. Most of these speak for themselves, but in older games they were worded differently and had different features, for example in the older games you could start as one class, but pick up other classes from wounded soldiers. EA have changed this feature with the more recent additions to the series, but I feel in doing this they have made the games all the more realistic.

Jet action in Battlefield 3

The earlier games were all about the campaign mode, but later games such as Bad Company and Battlefield 3 featured the online mode. I do feel as the games have evolved they have focused more time on the online mode, rather than the campaign. This could be the reason that the games haven’t had the credit they deserve and I must honest, the campaigns in the Call of Duty series were 100 times better, but I challenge anyone to find me a more exciting online FPS game.

So I ask, why is Battlefield so underrated? In particular, why is Modern Warfare 3 more popular than Battlefield 3? They were both released around the same time, but whenever I talk to people about Battlefield 3, they always shoot me down and say Modern Warfare 3 is better. In my opinion, Battlefield 3 has better graphics, better online play and a lot more realism. This isn’t an attack on Modern Warfare 3, as I have played it and loved it. The campaign was a lot more exciting, but I got bored with the online mode fairly quickly. Then I played Battlefield 3 and I have never looked back.

Battlefield 4 is coming out soon and includes all new features, including levolution. I won’t go into detail about this new feature, but this is something that has never been seen in gaming before. It is due for release on November the 1st and I implore you to go out and buy it. You will not be disappointed.
